Hyde - 63
Wanyflete - 54
In a Friday night, overtime thriller at the Hyde school, the varsity men’s program topped the visitors from Wanyflete in a battle marked by deep grit and determination on both sides of the ball. Tied at the end of the first quarter, Hyde was being carried by their senior captain David Duncan ‘10, and his uncanny ability to track down rebound after rebound. Taking a 13 point lead into the locker room at half, the Phoenix hoped to continue asserting their will. After a fast start in the third quarter which saw Ted Cercos ‘11 finding the range from three-point land, the home squad saw their lead start to dwindle. Despite Harry Smith ‘10 taking charge in the final quarter the visitors would not be denied and forced the game into an extra period. It was Smith that rose for the Phoenix, starting the extra session with an and-one, that boosted morale and the energy in the gym. Chris Moulton ‘12 stepped up big off the bench for the Phoenix throughout the game. Hyde travels to Wanyflete this coming Friday for an encore match that is sure to be close.
