Hyde’s Indoor Track program competed on Wednesday in a four-way meet against Phillips-Andover, Governors Academy and Wilbraham-Monson. It was a little intimidating walking into the indoor track facility to see 95+ track athletes from Andover, another 25 from Governors and 20+ from Wilbraham. We had eight competing athletes total (four men and four women… CeCe Jackson ‘10 was sidelined the day with an injury).
The first scoring event was the women’s mile. At the end of this race we began to see that we may be a David amidst these Goliath track programs. Hannah MacMillan ‘10 won the mile (6:30.2). From there, the meet proceeded to surprise us all… Hannah later took second in the 2-mile, loosing by three-one-hundredths of a second to her team mate Robin Platte ‘10, the race winner. Robin also won the women’s high jump with a personal best 4′ 8″. In her first-ever track meet, Olivia Chance ‘10 placed 3rd in the shot put (25′ 2″) and 3rd in the 600 (1:51.7). Emeline Ferguson ‘11 took 5th place in the 50 sprint (8.19) and ran a gusty 300, just missing placing. The four Hyde girls also competed in the mile relay, taking 3rd place. Amazingly, the four-member Hyde women’s team took 2nd place in the meet with a score of 31 points.
On the men’s side, we also have some strong performances on our way to a 3rd place team placing (16 team points). Juno Ra ‘11 won the 600 (1:36.2) in his first-ever track meet. Kenton Powell ‘10 took a third place in the shot put (39′ 2″), also in his first-ever track meet, and Zach Pfosi ‘10 took a second place in the 2-mile (11:30.8) and a third place in the one mile (5:22.3). Paxton Hansard ‘12, in his first week of Hyde and first-ever track meet competed in the mile and 300.
It was quite a day for Hyde track and field. Needless to say, I went to bed that night with a big smile on my face… so did nine other Hyde students.
