Hyde - 54
Calais - 66
The boy’s basketball team traveled to chilly Calais, Maine this past Saturday to face off against the defending state champion Blue Devils. The Hyde Phoenix got off to a slow start and quickly found themselves in a 8-2 hole. After a timeout Hyde started to find to bottom of the bucket. Junior Ted Cercos found the three point range and helped to push the Phoenix tempo. Harry Smith also found the basket lifting the team to a small lead. The defense started to click and it looked like the Phoenix might be able to take the lead into the half. The Blue devils were able to counter, and started to figure out the zone defense, regaining the lead before the break. A five point spread separated the teams at the beginning of the third quarter. The game was back and forth with the Phoenix never quite able to overcome the half time deficit. Mike Kean and Henry Killeen split the time at the point guard position, both contributing strongly on both sides of the ball. After a small run by the Blue Devils in the fourth quarter that pushed the lead to 15, David Duncan decided to take the game into his hands. He threw down a dunk that was generated from a Harry Smith feed. The devils were able to respond however, and they held off the Phoenix in the closing minutes of the game. The Phoenix did many good things and look to continue those against Rangely at home this coming Tuesday.
