James Roman Tournament Results:
Game #1
Hyde-Bath - 43
Hyde-Woodstock - 61
As the James Roman Memorial Tournament pushed on into the fourth game of its opening evening, the Phoenix men took the court against their sister school rivals from Woodstock. The gym was loud as blue and gold battled from the first whistle. The game was close in the opening minutes with Woodstock pushing the tempo of the game and taking a slight edge in the scoring. Senior captain Harry Smith handled much of the pressure from the WolfPack, fending off former teammates, who were returning to Bath, wearing a different uniform, for the first time since their run through the Augusta tournament last year. Kenton Powell, a post-graduate student, in his first year at Hyde, stepped up and inspired the Phoenix with athletic play and aggressive rebounding. The margin was five at the half and both teams went to the locker room looking for answers. In the second half, the wolf pack came out strong, widening the gap and eventually going on to defeat the Phoenix. Junior Mike Keene put in some quality minutes off the bench for the Bath squad and looks to lead the point for the team in the upcoming Maine Principles Association season.
Game #2
Hyde-Bath - 63
Kents Hill - 53
In the consolation game of the tournament, Hyde-Bath squared off against the Huskies from Kent’s Hill. As was the standard for the tournament, the energy was high and the players fed off the crowd’s enthusiasm. With determined physically play from Kaniel Rose-Tamkin, the Phoenix jumped out to an early lead and looked to widen the gap going into the half. The huskies would not go quietly and battled back to take over the scoring margin by the half time break. After a rousing speech in the locker room, the Phoenix took the floor and the lead for good. Behind senior captain David Duncan, Bath rallied to jump out to the ten point lead that they ended the game with. Duncan scored 20 of his 28 points in the second half boosting the moral and the energy in the gym with a thunderous dunk late in the game. Ted Cercos put in a great effort on the wing, producing some key steals late in the game to prevent any chance for the Huskies to climb back into the game. The Phoenix will look to take their positive play forward as they prepare for their first regular season game against Calais, last year’s Maine state champions.
