Bath, ME–Students and teachers from the Hyde Leadership Public Charter School in Washington DC traveled north to Maine by bus last week for a four-day visit to Hyde’s boarding campus in Bath. This was the school’s fifth annual senior class visit to the Bath campus.
The seniors, who returned to DC on Friday, participated in workshops, discussions and team-building activities with their Bath counterparts to explore character and leadership development in preparation for their spring graduations. As urban day students, the DC group experienced a boarding school “day in the life” by attending classes, sports, dorm life, and other activities specific to a boarding school program. They also gave Bath students some insight on how their school day in an urban environment differs and is similar to the boarding school environment.
During daily workshops, the two groups discussed the founding principles of the Hyde program: courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity, and concern and other core elements of the Hyde School philosophy.
In one session with Hyde Founder, Joseph W. Gauld, students openly discussed the attitudes they have carried in their daily lives and how those attitudes molded who they are today. One DC student said “The five words are life; you have to play with them and shape them into your own ball and play around with them—so it makes sense to you and who you are.”
Bath Hyde School teacher Claire Grant said, “As day students, these DC seniors bring Hyde ‚Äòhome’ every day. It is important for them to share with us their understanding of Hyde concepts at home, and it is important for us to share with them our residential life and commitment to living out of our five words and principles every day.”
The student groups connected within minutes of their first meeting, and many individuals expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to participate in an experience that they believe would have a life-long impact.
The DC seniors led a school-wide meeting where they performed skits and step-dance routines to celebrate their spirit and culture. The meeting included an open-forum dialogue, an exchange of questions and perspectives about aspects of life they share in common.
The Bath Leaders and Learners group will also visit Washington, DC during an experiential field trip this weekend. This spring, more Bath seniors will have the opportunity to visit the DC campus so that the exchange of experience continues to enrich both communities. The Washington DC Hyde Leadership Public Charter School was founded in 1999 by Bath’s current Head of School, Don MacMillan and wife Gigi MacMillan.

I have three areas of specialization in English, Social Science, and Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum, school references from my three plus years of substitute teaching, and a honors level academic record.
